Sampling of H.O.W’s Good Stewardship
Here is a sampling of the technologies and methods that we employ in our quest to be good environmental citizens.
Tractors
- In the 1980s, we broke new ground by adding aerodynamic wind shields to our tractors.
- We use the latest diesel technology, lighter-weight materials, and a variety of EPA Smartway-approved devices to lower our fuel consumption by over eight percent, and to reduce our emissions in the process. linkto our smartway loose page
- Battery powered air conditioning with multiple back-up batteries allows drivers to turn off the truck engine when they are stopped.
- Eco flaps allow air movement through mud flaps while minimizing water and debris cast up at following vehicles, cutting wind resistance at the same time.
- Company speed limit is set at 63 mph, reducing fuel consumption by 3% and helping us to maintain high safety standards.
Trailers
- Aerodynamic side skirts and other features reduce wind resistance around the trailer.
- Low rolling resistance dual tires with smaller diameters, automatic tire inflation and wheel covers decrease rolling resistance and improve fuel efficiency.
A Passion for Stewardship
H.O.W’s enthusiasm for environmentally responsible operations is reflected in other best practices:
- Matching drivers and loads as efficiently as possible, including arranging cross-dock and backhaul opportunities.
- Reducing out-of-route and deadhead miles.
- Using paperless logs and striving toward a paperless workplace at large.
- Employing driver teams.
- Recycling all waste oils, tires, paper, cardboard, glass and other recyclable materials.
- Shutting down electronic equipment when not in use to reduce electricity consumption.
- Protecting the contents being transported with responsible packing practices, to ensure that they won’t have to be re-shipped.
H.O.W sustainability is practiced here because it’s a win/win for everyone. We understand that what’s good for the environment can be good for the bottom line.
